The Mid-Autumn day (中秋节Zhōngqiūjié) is coming, people are giving presents to each other, so today we are talking about the measure words for gifts.

份 fèn

1. For parts, portions of a whole

Example:

1) 我把礼品分成四份，每人一份

Wǒ bǎ lǐpǐn fēnchéng sìfèn, měirén yīfèn.

I divided the presents into four portions, one per person.

2. For a set of things, a whole composed of different parts.

Example:

1) 我要一份三号套餐。

Wǒ yào yīfèn sānhào tàocān.

I want to have a No.3 set meal.

3. For newspapers, magazines, periodicals, documents, ect.

Example:

1) 我每个月要看三份杂志。

Wǒ měige yuè yào kàn sānfèn zázhì.

I will read three different magazines every month.

件 Jiàn

1 For matters in general

Example:

1) 他送了我一件很特别的礼物。

Tā sòngle wǒ yījiàn hěn tèbié de lǐwù.

He gave me a very special present.

2. For clothing, for upper clothing.

Example:

1) 我喜欢这件蓝色的衬衫。

Wǒ xǐhuan zhèjiàn lánsè de chènshān.

I live this blue shirt.

3. For documents, law cases, etc.

Example:

1) 一上班他就接到一件特急件。

Yī shàngbān tājiù jiē dào yījiàn tèjíjiàn.

He received an urgent dispatch as soon as he arrived in the office.
